Deep Purple in Quebec City

Corbeau flies away with the show

Tuesday, August 12, 13 o'clock: after learning that the show was "sold out" and was changed from 14 to 12, still without tickets (initially available in Charlesbourg, Quebec and Ste-Foy) I decided to leave Montreal in the direction of the Capitol theatre. It is located in the old Quebec and got a capacity of 1,500 people.

Quebec, 17 o'clock: Fortunately the theatre is only about 8 minutes away by walk from the terminus. Already some people are looking for a ticket. Depending on their luck, it costs them $15, $20, $25 and even $50. For tickets worth between $9.50 and $12.50. At this point, no one knows which members will play tonight.
19 o'clock: they let me in and meet "les murs de son" concert organizator Robert Boulay of Quebec, as well as the road manager of the group. They give me some much-needed clarification. The group is composed of Deep Purple's first singer, Rod Evans, from "Hush" period. After his experience with "Captain Beyond" he decided to restart the ship in February 1980, with Tony Flynn (ex-Steppenwolf) on lead guitar, Geoff Emery (ex-Steppenwolf and Iron Butterfly), keyboards and vocals, Dick Jurgens (ex-Association) on drums and finally Tom de Riviera, bass and vocals. They are going to move to the States, then Japan and Europe at last. An album is planned for October.
opening act, Corbeau, 21:15 o'clock: the band enters the stage. They offered a very good performance, in particular the guitarist Jean Millaire. Marjo and his two inseparable always moving as much. The crowd responded very well.
The new Deep Purple: after a longer intermission, 'The new Deep Purple' with Rod Evans started at 23 o'clock. The reactions are diverses, already some talking of false advertising. Starting up (?) with "Highway Star", the sound is completely unbalanced. The microphone of the singer works 1 time out of 10. The guitarist is a real caricature of Blackmore by his performance and his 'look alike'. The drummer got more chrome on him then is battery, the organist seems to miss his mother. Going on with "Might Just Take Your Life" from the Burn album. The next song is from the time when Evans was in the band. It was the only one and i'ts an instrumental. The guitarist is doing a long solo full of clichés. The keyboard player follows with the worst organ solo I've heard for 10 years. Lord would have a syncope. "Space Truckin" is done instrumental, as the microphones still don't work. The following drum solo was very well booed by the audience. Fifth song is "Woman From Tokyo", where some vocals could be heard. But it is already the last one. The guitarist tells us that if we don't want to see them we have to leave the area. They only played 30 minutes on a contract of 90 minutes. Objects of any kind are thrown to the stage. The audience is rebellious, people want to get their money back. Some guy decided to burn the sweater he bought for $7.00 at the entrance. The police arrived on the scene and evacuated the place. IN CONCLUSION: This is the "FLOP 80", the only one I hope. I go back in the direction of Montréal with 25 other young people, completely stunned. People of Quebec expect a statement from the producers of the show soon. Eric Jean, a disappointed reader, returns to Lac St-Jean. BRIEF A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT.

Ils me donnent quelques précisions tant attendues.
The new Deep Purple: après une entracte interminable, on nous présente ´The new Deep Purple` avec Rod Evans à 23 hres. L´on enchaine avec "Might Just Take Your Life", de l´album Burn. Comme 5ième pièce "Woman From Tokyo". L´on réussit à entendre quelques paroles.
BREF UNE DECEPTION TOTALE.
