DIRTY TRICKS
Night Man
(Polydor Super 2383398)
I was surprised to find myself impressed by this band´s debut album which I came across some months back. Dirty Tricks have just completed two successful tours supporting Budgie and Streetwalkers, and are building themselves a steady following of “head bashers” across the country.
They have now come up with Night Man, a highly impressive second album produced by themselves, tough I notice special thanks go to Mr. Visconti. Comparisons with Led Zeppelin are inevitable. The most successful tracks on the album are the powerful title track, Weekend Raver and Armageddon. Weekend Raver undoubtedly should have been released as a single. My favourite is the outstanding Armageddon written by bass player, Terry Horbury. Hopefully, it will get the airplay it deserves. The band have used keyboards and backing singers on the album and should consider using a similar format on the road. Since the album was recorded, drummer John Lee, has departed to the States. Will his replacement, Andy Beirne, be able to supply the music with equally powerful and imaginative drumming? Definitely an album to lend an ear to, though more suited to a late audience. Incidentally, credit to Mick Rock (and Jan) for the sleeve design.
